How to Verify a Supplier UL Certification in 3 Steps

Compare2Best Lighting Guide

A PDF certificate from a supplier is not verification. The only reliable method is to look up the file number directly in the issuing lab database. Three suppliers were caught in 2025-2026 whose UL certificates listed a different company name than the entity selling the product.

Step 1: UL Product iQ

Obtain the UL file number from the supplier — format is E followed by 5-6 digits (e.g., E123456). Search this number at productiq.ul.com. Verify the manufacturer name exactly matches the entity you are buying from, the product category (CCN) matches your product type, and the listing status is "Active" — not Archived or Cancelled.

Step 2: DLC Cross-Reference

For fixtures sold in North America, cross-reference the exact model number at designlights.org. The DLC Qualified Products List requires the manufacturer name and specific model to be listed. A supplier with a DLC listing for one product category (e.g., PAR38 lamps) cannot claim coverage for a different category (e.g., 2x4 panel lights).

Step 3: Lab Accreditation

Verify the testing laboratory is ILAC-accredited at ilac.org. Unaccredited lab reports — even if they display UL or CE logos — carry no regulatory weight. Per ISO/IEC 17025 and UL 8750 (LED equipment) / UL 1598 (luminaires) standards.

Cross-Reference Rule

Match across all three sources: UL file + DLC listing + IEC test report from an ILAC-accredited lab. Two out of three matching is acceptable for standard procurement. Only one matching source is a red flag requiring further investigation.
